After you install the online release notes for a product
(the relnotes subsystem), you can view the release notes on
your screen.
Note: You can read the online release notes for most
products before installing the software. Refer to
the booklet in your CD-ROM case for more information.
If you have a graphics system, select ``Release Notes'' from
the Help submenu of the Toolchest. This displays the
grelnotes(1) graphical browser for the online release notes.
Refer to the grelnotes(1) man page for information on
options to this command.
If you do not have a graphics system, you can use the
relnotes command. Refer to the relnotes(1) man page for
accessing the online release notes.
1.4 Product Support
Silicon Graphics, Inc., provides a comprehensive product
support maintenance program for its products.

Graphics customer who has a valid software support contract
and specifies a CD software media update option. To get this
software CD, customers simply contact their local Silicon
Graphics representative and ask to enter into a support
contract, like Full or Basic. Then, specify software
updates by CD. A Desktop Special Edition CD will be shipped
to the software update contact. Allow 2 to 4 weeks for
delivery.

Silicon Graphics sales office. If you are in the U.S. or
Canada and would like assistance with your Silicon
Graphics-supported products, contact the Technical
Assistance Center at (800)800-4SGI. If you are outside
these areas and require assistance, contact the Silicon
Graphics subsidiary or authorized distributor in your
country.

Installation Information
2. Installation Information
This chapter lists supplemental information to the IRIS
Software Installation Guide. The information listed here is
product- and release-specific; use it with the Installation
Guide to install this product.
2.1 General Installation Information
If you are installing this software from the Desktop Special
Edition CD you may not wish to install all the products.
There are three methods you can use to help determine what
software products you wish to install. You can insert the
CD and read the release notes for each product (refer to the
CD installation booklet included with the CD for information
on how to do this). A second method is to insert the CD,
double-click on the icon and click "Custom Installation" in
the Software Manager application to browse the products on
the CD. For more complete information we recommend that you
first install only the WhatsNew product and the
1_1_DesktopSpecialEdition release notes. The WhatsNew
product will display extensive information about all the
products on the Desktop Special Edition CD the first time
you log into your system.
If you already have a World Wide Web Server installed on
your system, we advise you to read through the release notes
for the OutBox product before you install your Desktop
Special Edition software. If you are running early releases
of the Netscape Communications Server (prior to version
1.12), Silicon Graphics recommends that you upgrade to
version 1.12. It is important to read the release notes for
version 1.12 prior to installing it.
If you are a software developer and have il_dev already
installed on your system, refer to chapter 3, Known Problems
and Workarounds.
Do not install the Showcase 3.3.3 product if you are running
in the Japanese, Korean or Chinese locales. Instead,
install the version of Showcase that appears in the latest
version of the language module for your locale. If you have
already installed Showcase 3.3.2 or Showcase 3.3.3 you must
install patch 1005 to restore the CID font capability.
2.2 Information Specific to Systems with Desktop Special
Edition Pre-Installed
To determine whether your system has the Desktop Special
Edition software pre-installed on the hard disk use the
Software Manager tool, click on the "Manage Installed"
button and look in the list of software for the
"1_1_1_DesktopSpecialEdition" product. The presence of this
product on your hard disk indicates that you have the
Desktop Special Edition software pre-installed on your
system.
If you have the Desktop Special Edition software pre-
installed on your system the following information applies:
+ You may have purchased additional software products
included with your system (e.g. Indy Modeler, WebFORCE,
IndyStudio). In order to determine which additional
products have been installed on your system refer to
the WhatsNew pages by selecting "What's New?" on the
Find menu of the Toolchest.
+ There may be additional products on your Desktop
Special Edition CD that have not been pre-installed on
your hard disk. To install these products refer to the
CD installation booklet included with the CD. These
products may require a license. To obtain temporary
licenses send electronic mail (email) to
demolicense@sgi.com. The content of the message is
ignored. You will receive an automatic email response
to your license request. Alternatively, you can use
the World Wide Web to request temporary licenses from
http://www.sgi.com/Products/Evaluation/.
+ The PC-NFS Server Components product is included on the
Desktop Special Edition CD but may not been pre-
installed on your hard disk. In order to use or
configure this product you must first install the NFS
product. If you do not have the NFS product, it may be
purchased from your local Silicon Graphics
representative.
+ Several software patches have been pre-installed on
your hard disk. There are several additional patches
that can be installed from the CD. Refer to section 2.6
for patch information.
2.3 Upgrading IRIX 5.3 Systems to Desktop Special Edition
The following information applies to systems running IRIX
5.3 that are being upgraded to run the Desktop Special
Edition software.
+ If you already have a World Wide Web Server installed
on your system, we advise you to read through the
release notes for the OutBox product before you install
your Desktop Special Edition software. If you are
running early releases of the Netscape Communications
Server (prior to version 1.12), Silicon Graphics
recommends that you upgrade to version 1.12. It is
important to read the release notes for version 1.12
prior to installing it.
+ In order to properly view all documentation for the
Desktop Special Edition software, you are advised to
install the Netscape Navigator product. If your
WEBBROWSER environment variable has been set to point
to a browser other than the Netscape Navigator, you are
advised to unset the variable or change it to point to
the Netscape Navigator.
+ There are several software patches included on the
Desktop Special Edition CD. Please refer to section
2.6 for patch information.
2.4 Upgrading IRIX 6.1 Systems to Desktop Special Edition
The following information applies to systems running IRIX
6.1 that are being upgraded to run the Desktop Special
Edition software.
+ Desktop Special Edition is supported on IRIX 5.3 and
6.1, but the digital media tools contained in the
dmedia_tools product do not support MPEG and Quicktime
movie playback on IRIX 6.1. This limitation will
prohibit certain sample movies from playing.
2.5 Product Licenses Installed
2.5.1 License Information for Systems with Desktop Special
Edition Pre-Installed A number of Desktop Special Edition
applications require a license. Certain applications cannot
be used without a license while others require a license for
use of advanced features. If you already have a permanent
license for desired applications, the information below is
not applicable.
The following table lists the application and the type of
license provided with the Desktop Special Edition based on
the type of system you have purchased. Other products
bundled separately may require vendor-specific licenses.
Please refer to the documentation included with those
products for information regarding their licenses.

Known Problems and Workarounds
3. Known Problems and Workarounds
+ In this release, we have included an updated version of
il_eoe which will cause a conflict with il_dev if it
has been installed previously. To work around this
problem, the 2.5 version of il_dev needs to be
installed. To acquire the 2.5 version of il_dev
contact your local Silicon Graphics representative.
+ For proper functioning of SoundPlayer you must install
dmedia_eoe.sw.midi from the Desktop Special Edition CD.
+ Do not install the Showcase 3.3.3 product if you are
running in the Japanese, Korean or Chinese locales.
Instead, install the version of Showcase that appears
in the latest version of the language module for your
locale. If you have already installed Showcase 3.3.2 or
Showcase 3.3.3 you must install patch 1005 to restore
the CID font capability.
+ At this time (Spring '96) there appears to be an
anomaly with Adobe Illustrator on SGI systems. If you
encounter an error dialogue box while using
Illustrator, you should save your work immediately and
frequently thereafter (or save, quit, and re-open the
file). A patch may become available for this problem,
check the Download Cool Software website on Silicon
